Things get more complicated as would-be lawyer Mike plays the tapes from a former patient with multiple personalities, including the mysterious Simon who does not appear until Session 9, and as Hank disappears after finding some old coins.

*Associate Selection

The Shining

142 Minutes (1980) - Stanley Kubrick
Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Selector: HiGrade

Torrance, a beleaguered writer and recovering alcoholic, has just secured a seasonal position as the caretaker for the Overlook Hotel. Seems like a cake job. You get to spend all winter cooped up in a big hotel with all the food, space, and fun you can enjoy. No guests to fool with and just a little up keep of the grounds and building. There will be plenty of time to work on your book and, of course, slaughter your family.

So along with his wife Wendy and their boy Danny, the Torrances head off to enjoy a little family bonding at the old Overlook Hotel. Oh...I forget to mention that Danny is bringing along his imaginary friend Tony, the little boy who lives in the back of his mouth and helps him to see things that aren't suppose to be there. "The Shining" allows Danny to see the past, present, and future digressions of the Overlook. It's haunting existence becomes quite evident as he witnesses the death and destruction that has come to called this place home. An evil that is looking to add three new guest...permanently. REDRUM REDRUM!!!!!

Slowly this evil begins to wear down Jack's defenses as the winter snow falls driving him to the brink of insanity. It is so easy to hit a man when he is down as Jack is re-introduced to an old, dear friend..... booze. When Wendy stumbles upon Jack's next bestseller, "All work and no play...." she know that it is time to get Danny the hell out of there. But it seems that the Hotel won't make that easy. Directed by the ghostly apparition of Grady, the former caretaker who chopped up his family, Jack heads out to correct his little problem. Here's Johnny!!!!! Axe blows and one liners fly as Jack chops his way towards the film's chilling conclusion. Will the Overlook be checking in three new guest or will the maze be the place for ultimate checkout?

The Host (Gwoemul)

119 Minutes (2006) - Joon-ho Bong
Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Selector: MONA

The talk of the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival and the latest film from critically acclaimed visionary director BONG Joon-ho, THE HOST is both a creature-feature thrill ride and a poignant human drama. Gang-du works at a food-stand on the banks of the Han River. Dozing on the job, he is awakened by his daughter, Hyun-seo, who is angry with him for missing a teacher-parent meeting at school. As Gang-du walks out to the riverbank with a delivery, he notices that a large crowd of people have gathered, taking pictures and talking about something hanging from the Han River Bridge. The otherwise idyllic landscape turns suddenly to bedlam, when a terrifying creature climbs up onto the riverbank and begins to crush and eat people. Gang-du and his daughter run for their lives, but suddenly the being grabs Hyun-seo and disappears back into the river. The government announces that the monstrous thing apparently is the Host of an unidentified virus. Having feared the worst, Gang-du receives a phone call from his daughter who is frightened, but very much alive. Gang-du soon makes plans to infiltrate the forbidden zone near the Han River to rescue his daughter from the clutches of the horrifying Host.

Young Frankenstein

106 Minutes (1974) - Mel Brooks
Wednesday, October 3, 2007 Selector: Jack

Lending his burlesque touch to 1970s genre revision, this film is a parody of 1930s Universal horror movies. Determined to live down his family's reputation, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein insists on pronouncing his name "Fronckensteen" and denies interest in replicating his grandfather's experiments. But when he is lured by Frau Blucher to discover the tantalizingly titled journal "How I Did It" in his grandfather's castle, he cannot resist. With the help of voluptuous Inga, wall-eyed assistant Igor “Eye-gor”, and a purloined brain, Frankenstein creates his monster. Igor, however, stole the wrong brain, and the monster tears off into the countryside, encountering a little girl and a blind hermit. Frankenstein finds the monster and trains him to do a little "Puttin' On the Ritz" soft-shoe, but the monster escapes again, this time seducing Frankenstein's uptight fiancée Elizabeth with his, ahem, sweet mystery. His love life and experiment in shambles, Frankenstein finally finds a way to create the being he had planned. Shooting in gleaming black-and-white, with sets and props from the original 1930s film and appropriate fright music by John Morris, Brooks' cheeky attitude towards the Hollywood past attracted a large audience, turning it into one of the most popular 1974 releases after (what else?) Blazing Saddles.

The Producers

88 Minutes (1968) - Mel Brooks
Wednesday, September 26, 2007 Selector: Bubbleman

Theatrical producer Max Bialystock was once the toast of Broadway. Now he lives in his seedy office, cadging cash contributions from wealthy old ladies in exchange for sexual favors. Even worse: he's reduced to wearing a cardboard belt. Max's new accountant Leo Bloom, the soul of honesty, suggests that Max produce a hit to try to recoup his losses, but Max knows that it's too late for that. Offhandedly, Leo muses that, if Max found investors for a flop, he could legally keep all the extra money. Suddenly, Max's eyes light up—and in that moment, Leo Bloom is gloriously corruptible. "I want everything I've ever seen in the movies!" cries Leo as Max embraces him. Together, Max and Leo conspire to select the worst play, the worst playwright, the worst director, and the worst actor to collaborate on their guaranteed flop. That play is Springtime for Hitler, "a delightful romp... with Adolph Hitler and Eva Braun." The playwright is Franz Liebkind, an unreconstructed Nazi who, in drunken delirium, insists that Hitler was a better painter than Churchill: "He could paint an entire apartment in one afternoon, two coats!" The director is pompous transvestite Roger De Bris, who is preparing to go to a costume party garbed as Marie Antoinette when Max and Leo come calling. And the star, selected after extensive auditions, is hippie-freak Lorenzo S. Dubois—L.S.D. for short. At the end of several weeks, Max has sold 25,000% of the show; and, as a finishing touch, Max bribes the opening-night critics for a favorable review, knowing full well that such a gesture is the kiss of death. The curtains part, and Springtime for Hitler opens with perhaps the most tasteless production number in the history of films. At the end of this extravaganza, the audience sits in dumbfounded silence. Gleefully, Max and Leo repair to a corner bar to celebrate their failure. But then...

Snatch.

102 Minutes (2000) - Guy Ritchie
Wednesday, September 19, 2007 Selector: HiGrade

Turkish and his close friend/accomplice Tommy get pulled into the world of match fixing by the notorious Brick Top. The tale tells the stories of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the eyes of a singular narrator: Buscapé, a poor black youth too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also too smart to be content with underpaid, menial jobs. He grows up in a very violent environment. The odds are all against him. But Buscapé soon discovers that he can see reality differently than others. His redemption is that he's been given an artist's point of view as a keen-eyed photographer. As Buscapé is not the real protagonist of the film—only the narrator—he is not the one who makes the decisions that will determine the sequence of events. Nevertheless, not only his life is attached to what happens in the story, but it is also through Buscapé's perspective of life that one can understand the complicated layers and humanity of a world, apparently condemned to endless violence.

The Taking of Pelham 123

104 Minutes (1974) - Joseph Sargent
Wednesday, September 5, 2007 Selector: MONA

Pelham 1-2-3, a subway train, becomes the focal point of the most audacious and unusual terrorist attack ever seen. On a hot summer afternoon, the First Savings Bank of Brooklyn is held up by Sonny and Sal, two down-and-out characters. Although the bank manager and female tellers agree not to interfere with the robbery, Sonny finds that there's actually nothing much to steal, as most of the cash has been picked up for the day. Sal serves up slices with his two sons, genial Vito and angry, racist Pino. Sal has one black employee, Mookie, who wants to "get paid" but lacks ambition. His sister Jade, who has a greater sense of purpose and a "real" job, wants Mookie to start dealing with his responsibilities, most notably his son with girlfriend Tina. Two of Mookie's best friends are Radio Raheem, a monolith of a man who rarely speaks, preferring to blast Public Enemy's rap song Fight The Power on his massive boom box; and Buggin' Out , nicknamed for his coke-bottle glasses and habit of losing his cool. When Buggin' Out notes that Sal's "Wall of Fame," includes no people of color, he eventually demands a neighborhood boycott, on a day when tensions are already running high, that incurs tragic consequence.

original post and comments

Bad News Bears

102 Minutes (1976)- Michael Ritchie
Wednesday, July 4, 2007 Selector: MONA

Takes an unflinching look at the underbelly of little league baseball in Southern California. An excellent soundtrack, and a script which digresses through explanations of the Rasta faith and countless idiosyncratic solidarity rituals, make for a delightful piece of whimsy. Complete with subtitles transliterating the Rasta patois.

original post and comments

Los Olvidados

90 Minutes (1950)- Luis Bunuel
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Selector: MOFO

Looks unflinchingly at life in a Mexican slum. When the boss' daughter witnesses one of Ghost Dog's hits, he becomes expendable. The first victims are his birds, and in response, Ghost Dog goes right at his attackers but does not want to harm his master or the young woman. On occasion, he speaks with his best friend, a Haitian who sells ice cream in the park, although neither speaks the others language, but somehow can communicate effectively, and with a child with whom he discusses books. A "bug" in the system mixes up the last name of a terrorist (Tuttle) and an innocent man (ironically enough Buttle). Thus, the wrong man (Buttle) is arrested and killed while Tuttle continues to roam free. Sam Lowry, an average man with a mother who "knows people", is assigned to investigate the error. At the same time, Jill layton, Buttle's neighbor, is trying to report the mistake to authorities. Due to the extremely inefficient bureaucracy, she finds the process to be very tedious.
