The Changeling

115 Minutes (1980) - Peter Medak
Wednesday, October 31, 2007 Selector: MONA

It was the perfect family vacation for composer John Russell and his family when a freak automobile accident claims the lives of his wife and daughter. Consumed by grief, John, at the request of friends, rents an old turn of the century house. Mammoth in size, the house seems all the room that John needs to write music and reflect. He does not realize that he is not alone in the house. He shares it with the spirit of a murdered child who has homed in on John's despair and uses him to uncover decades of silence and deceit. With the help of Claire Norman, the one who aided John in procuring the house, they race to find the answers and soon learn that a devious and very powerful man guards them.

A small group of ghoulies gathered to watch MONA's screening of this atmospheric haunted house classic. The air was crisp and the atmosphere near perfect for Halloween, with creepy tendrils of wispy fog snaking their way through the Back-40. Big Save Scott joined MONA and East Bay J for the event, which started fairly auspiciously (though everyone missed HiGrade's excellent screen framing abilities; the projection was a bit trapezoidal). Perhaps no one was as spooked as poor Ozzie, who got seriously scared by all the banging and spectral moaning and spent most of the screening hiding under MONA's legs. Next week shall bring EBJ as selector for Bubbleman's birthday, and hopefully, the return of HiGrade and MOFO.
